Atherstone Town Councillors have had a busy month debating and acting on several issues.
Councillor Ray Jarvis has claimed that under the recent fire station changes being proposed by the County Council that Atherstone will in fact gain the addition of a new pump.
Lorraine Freer complained of lack of police action on certain issues, saying “policemen only stick up notices.”
It was also reported to councillors that the local boxing club was having no luck in securing suitable premises. Complaints have been received concerning alleged noise level infringements at The Angel Pub in The Market Square. It was agreed that the appropriate Borough authorities be advised as to the situation.
Rubbish in Long St. was also discussed. Several councillors complained of the amount of fast food containers dumped on Saturday nights. They asked that the clerk to the council contact Health , Safety & Environmental officers with a view to investigating the situation. They allege that “UK Pizza” on Long St is the main source of the rubbish.
The delicate subject of gravestones and graves was discussed at some length. It had been observed that some plots had been extended without permission and the clerk was requested to contact the individuals concerned. The council confirmed the purchase of land and allotments adjacent to the cemetery, to secure the long term needs of the community.
On the subject of grave stone stability testing the council worried that as a body they were vulnerable to litigation. No recognised criteria for testing the safety of gravestones was said to exist and it was felt that new cemetery rules may be needed to control the situation.
