Age ban on Cigarette sales may not work says MP

Monday, February 19th, 2007 by Geoff Wilding

Mike O’Brien says he is not naïve enough to believe under-age smoking will be stamped out by the government’s latest move.

From October, it will be illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to buy tobacco products. The minimum legal age limit is currently 16.

Bedworth-based Mr O’Brien, the government’s solicitor general, has welcomed the change. But he said:

Let’s not be naive – this won’t stop all under-age smoking. Some kids will take their parents’cigarettes or get someone over-age to buy them, but it will make it more difficult for children to get them in shops.
