Ex Cop Calls For Action on Parking

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007 by Geoff Wilding

Ex- Atherstone Police Sergeant David Hunter is reported in regional newspapers as demanding action about the number of motorists who park on double yellow lines and footpaths in Atherstone.

The former officer, who lives in Windmill Road, Atherstone, says he is fed up with the number of cars he sees parked illegally .

Mr Hunter when speaking to the press said:

When I was a sergeant at Atherstone police station I would not allow my constables to walk past cars parked on double yellow lines or on the footpath without issuing a parking ticket.

I know the police are always very busy and perhaps we ought to have traffic wardens so that police can focus on crime but where the law is being broken there is an obligation to enforce it.

Mr Hunter said he regularly sees cars parked on double yellow lines in Market Street and Church Street in the town centre and nobody issues a ticket - meaning that people are allowed to flout the law.

He said:

It’s time we had proper enforcement of the parking laws in Atherstone. I hope the police and local councillors are listening.

Finally! I’ve often felt that this is the case, however I note the problem area to be Long Street itself rather than the off-roads or Market Square. Even just one constable patrolling with tickets would deter the locals from breaking this law.
