The Clean Team targets Atherstone grot spot

Hundreds of empty drinks cans were amongst the rubbish collected by the Borough Council’s Streetscape Team in a mass clean-up .

The team had been alerted to the grot spot in Atherstone by residents concerned about the walk-way by Racemeadow School. Just off Ratcliffe Road and running parallel to the A5, the path is also used regularly by schoolchildren at Queen Elizabeth School.

As the County Council has recently declared it a public highway, it is now the Borough Council’s responsibility to keep the area litter-free. And to encourage local residents to ‘stop the drop’, two new litter bins will be installed along the route.

Richard Dobbs, Assistant Director for Streetscape said:

It really has been a transformation of an area, which has become increasingly unsightly – and thanks must go to the team, who gave up their Saturday morning to tackle the problem. It will now form part of the regular programme of litter clearance in Atherstone but it’s really down to everyone to ensure they use the bins and dispose of litter safely.

He added that the Streetscape Team had also been working hard to clean up the rural roads in the Borough and had successfully reduced the amount of litter over the last four years.
